About This Image

THE FOUR BRIDGES
These four bridges connect the suburbs of Indooroopilly and Chelmer with 2 railway bridges, a motor vehicle bridge and a pedestrian/cyclist bridge. The first bridge built, the Albert Bridge, connected Brisbane to Ipswich by rail and was opened in 1875, but was washed away in the 1893 flood. It was replaced by the current bridge in 1895 (third from left). The second bridge to be built on the site was the Sir Walter Taylor Bridge (far left) which opened to vehicular traffic and pedestrians in 1936. It is easily recognised by the accommodation towers at each end. Indooroopilly Railway Bridge (second from left) is the third to be built and opened in 1957. The last one to be built was the pedestrian and cyclist bridge, Jack Pesch Bridge (far right), named after the 1930’s cycling champion, Jack Pesch. It opened in 1998.
